This class is for students continuing from Beginning Latin 1A or for anyone who has had enough Latin to qualify for this level. This is the second half of the beginners’ sequence. If you have had some Latin before and think you may qualify for this level, please contact Student Affairs for a placement test.
In this class students will complete Collins (The textbook assigned in Latin 1A), although we will start out by jumping around quite a bit.
By the end of this course, students will be reading, albeit with difficulty, unadapted selections from prose authors. Your vocabulary will be weak, but your thorough grasp of Latin grammar will put you in a position to decipher, with time and effort, any Latin text you come across.
Latin 1B should be considered an immediate prelude to Latin II.
The required textbook for the course is:
John F. Collins, A Primer of Ecclesiastical Latin, 1988 edition (or any edition reprinted since then), The Catholic University of America Press.
Suggested textbooks:
Goldman, Norma and Ladislas Szymanski, English Grammar for Students of Latin, 3rd edition, Olivia and Hill Press.
A very useful review of English Grammar for those who have nor received a formal training in English grammar or who have forgotten what they once knew.
Scanlon, SecondLatin, any edition, TAN Books and Publishers.
This book was written to assist those who need to quickly learn to read philosophy, theology and canon law in Latin. The first part focusses on philosophy and the second part on canon law and theology. It also includes a very useful glossary. Students will find this book valuable in preparing for Latin II.
In addition to the lectures the lecturer will be available to assist students on-line during set office hours.
